The Many Reasons To (NOT) Look Forward To The New Ranbir And Shraddha Starrer

The trailer of Luv Ranjan's Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar starring Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor was released a couple of days ago.

The trailer of Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar released on 23 January 2023, and predictably it was trending on most social media platforms shortly thereafter. The movie sees the pairing of Shraddha Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor for the first time. The movie is directed, co-written and co-produced by Luv Ranjan (this is significant – read on). Check out the trailer of Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar and some of the reactions to it:

Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar (Official Trailer)

The trailer has had over 48 million views in less than 24 hrs so clearly, there is a great deal of anticipation in the film-going public with regard to this release. The movie releases on 8 March 2023.

Light-hearted rom-com?

Billed as a rom-com, the movie is shot in exotic locales like Spain and Mauritius and elsewhere. A lot of people are looking forward to some simple uncomplicated entertainment – a romantic comedy with good looking people and lovely locales.

Shraddha Kapoor’s (puzzling) tweet

As is usually the case, the lead actors of the film are busy promoting their film on social media. The woman lead of the film put out this rather puzzling tweet. Is this supposed to be in light of the fact that Ranbir Kapoor is a newly married man? Sort of I-am not-poaching-on-another-woman’s-territory kind of reassurance?

Alia Bhatt’s tweet about the trailer

The wife of the leading man also tweeted the trailer. The movie promises (or do I mean threatens) the story of a ‘player’ in the world of romantic relationships; who finds a girl who’s a ‘worthy opponent’. Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar claims to be a film where Love is a battle of wits (Kudos to Alia Bhatt for letting her man continue to act in movies even after marriage, by the way!)

This tweet by one stand-up comic about another

Anubhav Singh Bassi is a well-known stand-up comic who seems cast in the archetypal ‘best friend’ role in the film. Another popular stand-up comic Abhijit Ganguly was seen plugging a mate’s film.

The return of Ranbir ‘comic timing’

https://twitter.com/Harmindarboxoff/status/1614992927457148930

A lot of fans are noting that Ranbir Kapoor will be seen in a comic role movie after some considerable time. His more recent releases Shamshera and Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva came after a 4-year hiatus and were not exactly light-hearted films. That said, it beggars the imagination that the short clip in the tweet qualifies as ‘comedy’; where a woman is seen to be slyly but viciously attacking another. This is often the standard of ‘humour’ in our films… but that is a rant for another day.

Objectification both ways?

https://twitter.com/rajkbest/status/1617467747017056258

We certainly see the female lead in a variety of brief clothing, but in this case it seems to cut both ways. Clearly the demographic that likes to lust over chiselled male abs is also being catered to here.

Why my expectations are low

The filmmaker here is Luv Ranjan who has previously brought us films like Pyaar Ka Punchnama, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2, De De Pyaar De. If there is something that is common in each of these films it is that they are ‘bro’ films where the woman is always cast in the role of the manipulative, evil seductress.

We usually see trite stories about the hapless man caught in the snare of the scheming, grasping woman… is Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar going to be another? We shall know soon enough, on 8th March.
