Summer heat can be really unbearable. To make it bearable, here are 9 practical and easy everyday tips that can be easily managed at home.
The weather Gods are sending all the heat waves down to keep heaven cool for the good guys. I wonder how people are surviving in hell considering it’s probably a zillion time hotter in hell than here. Well, hopefully, I wouldn’t have to worry about being in hell for at least a while because I am working towards improving my karma (pun intended). The working towards Karma bit is also a little slow paced because the heat just gets to you every time you want to move out of your temperature-controlled home.
However, you got to do what you got to do, so I decided to try these 9 tried and tested methods this summer to help me keep cool.
Stay Hydrated
This is foremost the most important way to keep the soaring temperature in check. Staying hydrated obviously involves consuming a lot of liquids. I understand and agree that cold sodas, ice-creams, packed juices all seem very tempting to quench your thirst in the hot summer but are you aware that the sugar content in these drinks actually dehydrates you more? Hence your best bet is always, room temperature water, freshly made juices, fruits and vegetables that have high water content. Consuming these regularly will keep your body cool internally.
Summer Fashion
Personally, I love the winter collection however the city I live in doesn’t let me use my winter clothing for long. Hence the best time for all your cotton outfits, summer dresses, kurtas, palazzos, etc is summer of course. Cotton clothes help to absorb the sweat and helps your skin breathe. Be sure to change your clothes at least 3 times a day to keep the skin infections at bay. The same applies to your lingerie too.
Skin Care
A good sunscreen of at least SPF 50 is a must for the Indian skin. Choose a fragrance-free product. Cleansing and moisturising of the skin is a must in all seasons. The sunscreen needs to be applied at least 20mins prior to stepping out in the sun.
Exercise and Swimming
Yes..exercise is vital even in this weather. It helps regulate your body temperature and keeps you feeling energetic versus how the weather otherwise makes you feel. Swimming is again a great way to keep yourself cool and tone those muscles too.
Plan your day
Everything you learnt about time management ever, now is the time to apply it. Plan your day in a way where you don’t have to step out during the hot hours of the day. Even for basic grocery shopping, use online apps to get them delivered or shop for 3-4 days and stock them in the fridge.
Let Ayurveda come to your rescue
Ayurveda best describes all the pita in your body. Now is a good time to read and research about it. Ayurveda will also give you an insight on how to consume certain foods to keep your body cool from within.
Aloe Vera, Cucumber and Infused Water – Aloe Vera and Cucumber are known as cooling agents. Use them generously for your skin and hair. There are various skin and hair masks available online that use aloe vera as their main ingredient. Consuming cucumber cools down your body and also adds to the water content of your body. Did you know it’s a good source of protein too?
Coconut Water and Watermelon – Well..these are two fruits that will come to your rescue anytime. These are a good source of fibre, have great water content and amazing healing properties too.
Vent out
Yes, venting out is always good for us. Similarly running a fan and an air conditioner simultaneously can help cool you. You can use the air conditioner at lower power and still feel cool if the fan is blowing over you. That’s because the air conditioner removes humidity from the air while the fan helps evaporate sweat and moves heat away from your body. Turn on the vent in the bathroom. When taking a shower, be sure to use the vent fan. It helps sticky moisture escape.
Give your gadgets some rest
Give all your gadgets including your phones and AC some TLC. Overuse of these gadgets also generates heat. Give them rest and service them regularly.
Take a walk, read a book or listen to some music
You can do any of these or indulge in an activity that will help you relax and keep calm even when the temperature is soaring high.
So while I am on a one month break from work (benefits of working in a school, I am trying all of these ways to beat the heat and stay cool this summer. Do leave in comments and let me know what worked best for you.
