At a recent inter-collegiate and inter-school, French Festival, more than 150 students and teachers donated their hair cancer patients. We are loving this inspiring story!
On Friday January 17, 2020, the French Department of Mount Carmel College, Autonomous, Bangalore organised their annual inter-collegiate and inter-school French fest, ‘Franco Feel.’ The event took place after a gap of five years. But the fest came back and with a bang! It made a huge impact on the hearts and minds of students, teachers and the attendees alike.
Borrowed from Edith Piaf’s song, the theme for Franco-Feel this year was ‘La Vie En Rose.’ Piaf faced a lot of hardships in her life but helped people when she attained fame. The song when viewed from a metaphorical angle asks us to view life positively.
The word ‘rose’ means pink in French, which inspired the students to work for the cause of breast cancer. ‘Life through rose-tinted glasses’ is the positivity we need in the world today. The students wanted to help society in any way they could while making an impact drawing inspiration from the life of Edith Piaf.
What made the event a unique success is that these girls donated their locks to make wigs for underprivileged women with cancer. They collaborated with the Cherian Foundation. The hair donation drive that was open from 12pm to 4pm saw more than 150 students and teachers donate their hair. At one point, they even fell short of hairstylists.
“The response was unexpected because the last time this was organised in our college only 50 people came,” said Mridula Raghunandan, a first year student at Mount Carmel College. According to her, with the amount of hair donated, the foundation could easily make 700-800 wigs for people who’ve lost their hair to cancer.
The hair donation drive was abuzz with people. Everyone stood in queue and waited patiently for their turn making the hair donation drive a success. The students at Mount Carmel College believed in contributing to a social cause and do their part for society. They also had a gorgeous, life-size portrait (oil on canvas) of Edith Piaf made by Bhavana R.
Mrs. Sara Benjamin Cherian, Trustee of the Cherian Foundation, delivered a lecture to the students and extended a helping hand during the hair donation drive. A monetary donation was also made on the part of the French Department of Mount Carmel College. The keynote speaker, Dr. Mohit Chandna, also commended the students for their active efforts in giving back to society.
Ruthu M Bhat, the president-elect of the upcoming Student Union of Mount Carmel College and the current secretary of le Cercle Français, the French Association helped organise the fest for the first time in five years along with Apurva V, Bhavana R, Veronica R, the other secretaries of the association. She said that preparations for Franco-Feel were “very hectic” but she also found it to be “a learning experience.”
