The fat tax in the fashion industry came to the forefront of popular discourse when the Instagram account Diet Sabya criticised designers for charging higher prices for larger sized clothes. This sparked a greater discussion, with one user even stating they were charged 60, 000 rupees more for a ‘plus size’ lehenga.
What is Fat Tax?
The reasons provided to justify the fat tax include more time spent working on a piece, greater fabric costs, and the need to place special orders for unstocked items. To eliminate the fat tax, either the extra price charged on larger sizes would have to be reduced, or the prices of the entire range of clothes would have to be increased based on the largest size sold.
Cloth could also be used more sustainably to reduce waste, and stores would have to ensure larger sizes are kept in stock. So how viable are these options?
