Boredom at work
In this edition of the Q&A for working women in India, life coach Jaya Narayan helps a working woman analyse the root cause of boredom at work.
Hi, I am a BE graduate currently working for one of the multi-national companies in Delhi. I feel my job is very boring and I am looking for a change. I am interested in taking up MBA in a very good b-school, but I am scared because I don’t know how I could manage my studies as I am not that good at it. Setting up my career has become a major problem for me. Every now and then I feel so confused about my career I don’t know how to make it up. – Anonymous
Dear Anonymous
I am intrigued by your question. You are in an envious position. You are working in a reputed MNC and are an engineering graduate. Anyone else would like to trade places with you.
Here are a few questions for you:
1. What is causing the boredom at work – is there a way to reinvent yourself at the workplace? Is this a consistent pattern with you – do you constantly look for something new every few years? If you answer these questions with yes – a MBA or another job change will bring you back to the same point in a few years. I think you need to think about what you can do to motivate yourself at work and life. Is there a special hobby that you can practice? What could you do to compensate for the drain you feel at work? Do you need to take a break and travel every few months? What can help you regain motivation every time you feel bored?
2. What makes you feel that you are not good at studies? Most MBA courses especially today focus on on-the-job learning. Especially the top-listed B-schools make the learning process based on a combination of experiential and case study methodology. This takes away the typical learning patterns (rote) and sharpens application of knowledge.
3. I suggest you read about the strength-based approach I have written about in my earlier column. Somehow I get a sense that you are not leveraging your core strengths.
I wish you all the best and support for whatever you decide as the next step
