In the everyday bustle of being a wife, daughter, mother, sister – we often forget ourselves. Here is a poignant reminder to stay true to yourself, and to live a little.

There she was.

Sitting alone in her balcony at 11 pm, with a cup of hot jasmine tea in her hands, which was helping her keep warm on that cold night. Both the children were fast asleep, and the husband was traveling on business. She had the life that others were envious of; a big house, pretty and wise kids, and a rich, intelligent husband. But there she was, staring into open space, sitting out on that cold night, feeling a void deep, down inside. She loved her kids, her doting husband, and her palatial house, but she didn’t love herself like she used to.

She had given up too much to make this dreamy life possible.

She had stopped living for herself, feeling ‘only’ for herself. Her talks always started with her kids and her husband, and her day was planned around them. She had sacrificed her career (the only thing that was ‘hers’) for the lonely nights she had now. Even with the house full, there was an empty space inside her that haunted her all the time.

She had dreamt of this life. What went wrong?

There are so many of us women who feel like this at some point in our lives. We become doting mothers, loving wives, caring daughters and sisters, but stop being ourselves. Losing one’s identity in the stream of life is the biggest price that one can pay. Never forget how important it is to live your life on your own terms, as there is only one life to live.

Never miss real stories from India's women.

I am not saying that only a career can give you that satisfaction. Little comforts that you used to enjoy – like being around your parents, going on a drive with your friends, a yoga class, your singing practice, going for a run every evening – take time out for all of that, the things that make the true you.

After years of living without your identity, you might not remember at which corner you dropped it in this journey of life. Keep it intact.
