My Supportive In-Laws Helped Me Achieve The Best Of Both Worlds

As I look back over the past 15 years, I can’t help but recollect the immense support I have got from them. And yes, without a second thought, the wonderful people I am describing about are my in laws – papa and mummy.

‘She just called saying she will be a little late today. We will wait till she comes home for dinner.’

‘It’s raining heavily. Hope she has taken an umbrella. Did her presentation go well?’

A few familiar dialogues in a typical Indian household. Right? But who says this regarding whom, is something I would want to leave to your imagination and experience at this point.

Family isn’t always blood — it’s the people in your life who also want you in theirs. They accept you for who you are and are the ones who can do anything to see a smile on your face. They don’t judge you and love you no matter what.

I have a family which is just as described above.

But today, I would want you all to read through some familiar lines, but maybe for some it will bring an unanticipated twist in the end.

Marriage was set in stone

Having the joy of graduating my Master’s in Medicine (MBBS), and the news of my marriage being fixed on the other, the road ahead was pretty indecisive for me.

Having a brilliant academic record, I wanted to specialize and read more. Would marriage put a break on this wish of mine? Well, the cosmos seems to have read my mind.

Support came when I needed it most, that is post-marriage

Immediately post marriage, this couple stood by my side rock solid and pushed me to pursue my Post graduation (MD) over the next 3 years. With the biological clock ticking, when we decided to go the family way, there seemed to be a much-needed break in my career.

Soon, when my baby was around 7 months old, it was they who again supported me to continue my practice slowly and steadily.

As workplace distance doubled and working hours extended with promotions and additional responsibilities, I had but little choices than to leave complete supervision and running of the household to them.

They celebrated my achievements and shared my sorrows

Not a day of complaint, not a single whine is what I got to hear from them, even to this day! In fact, they are the first ones to celebrate my achievements and also the first ones to be a part of my sorrows. From taking care of the home to helping me cross the various hurdles of life with ease, they have been doing it all.

As the years are passing by, balancing between the challenges of being a doctor, mother, friend, spouse, the only role I have unconsciously not felt the burden of was that of being a daughter-in-law.

‘The life of the law has not been logic, it has been an experience’ — Oliver Wendell Holmes.

I downrightly agree to this.

Today, as I look back over the past 15 years, I can’t help but recollect the immense support I have got from them. And yes, without a second thought, the wonderful people I am describing about are my in laws – papa and mummy as I prefer to call them.

When it comes to the relationships in a family, there’s no denying that one of the most special yet intricate bonds is the one —  with our in laws. After all, they did raise one of the most important people in our lives.

I have been very lucky to have an ecosystem of in good laws, awesome parents and not to forget my husband who is my rock strength.

There will definitely be ups and downs in any relationship, but the key to sailing smooth is treating everyone else the way you want to be treated!
