Meet Binalakshmi Nepram, the woman who is helping the women affected by violence to live a dignified life in Manipur.
Being a researcher herself, one cold evening Binalakshmi was talking to a group of women in Manipur when she heard gunshots. A 27-year-old man was shot dead by unknown assailants. And 24-year-old woman Rebacca who was one of the women in the group whom Bina was talking to, was widowed.
Amidst all the crying Rebacca’s mother asked Bina how she was going to feed her now. That incident changed Binalakhsmi’s life. She founded the Manipur Women Gun Survivor’s network.
Manipur, though tucked in between beautiful mountains and with an abundance of nature, is one of the most conflict-prone areas in India. Bina with her foundation helps women who are affected by violence to live a dignified life.
It provides loans to built small business for the women. Not only this, they also provide legal assistance as well as emotional support to such women.
Watch her awe-inspiring journey in this video in the CNN-IBN Awards 2011.
