The Shani Shingnapur controversy is bringing all the self-appointed guardians of culture out of the woodwork with their ‘gyaan’.
If you don’t have news, then make news! Of late from celebrities to politicians to self-appointed ‘gyaanis’, everyone seems to milk the cash cow called ‘controversy’.
One such controversy was when Shani Shingnapur, a temple in Maharashtra, following a court order, decided to open its doors to women after 400 years. The move exposed the bigoted mentality of the so-called ‘gyaanis’ threadbare.
One such ‘gyaani baba’ was Swami Swaroopananda of Dwaraka-Sharda Peeth. Probably ‘Swamiji’s’ fan following had hit a plateau and he embarked on this opportunity as if he had struck gold!
‘Swamiji’ not only warned women that “worshiping Shani would increase the incidents of rapes” in the country but also went on to say that instead of celebrating this move as a win, “Women should rather pray that the people who indulge in alcoholism must not violate women.”
The issue is that people who are trusted by millions have a responsibility towards society at large. Their opinion and their statements have a mass impact. Sporadic and irresponsible statements of this nature, which are far from reality not only reflect negatively on their credibility and the trust of their followers but also takes the country back to the dark ages!
Take a look at what else ‘Swamiji’ had to say!
