The BBC recently came out with its ‘BBC 100 Women 2016’ – a list of influential and inspirational women of 2016. While all of these women aren’t famous, each of them is so beautifully working towards a cause in her own way.
The BBC 100 Women list is diverse and includes singer-songwriters, pop icons, environmentalists, a professional gambler, survivors, a football manager and some more.
These are women who have dared to be unconventional; who have followed their dreams and now are symbols of inspiration for others to strive for what is important to them. This list along with their stories remains a must see.
I particularly would like to point out towards the inclusion of Sunny Leone in this list. As we all know, Sunny was born in Canada and was a former porn star. She has now entered mainstream Bollywood. It is commendable of her to never hide or disguise where she came from.
She has always proudly worn her identity on her sleeve and never shied away from the limelight because of that. It is a validation of this fact that she was included in the BBC 100 Women list.
Maybe that is what the meaning of true empowerment is – to be able to make a choice out of free will and then sticking up for it unapologetically. She has been subjected to prejudice and ridicule at each step; questioned for her ways by a country that enjoys looking at her.
In spite of these odds, she is doing what she set out to do. She commands respect with the dignity that he carries herself with. She only asks that her choices be weighed maturely.
As she’s said – ‘It’s your right as a woman to follow your dreams and it’s your responsibility to make them come true.’ Kudos to Sunny Leone on making it to the prestigious BBC 100 Women list!
