Post Partum Depression is a term that most new mothers and people around them do not want to be associated with.
The reason? The word ‘depression’ that is a part of it! Our society still considers depression to be some sort of shame. Plus, the new mother always gets to see wonderful images of motherhood everywhere – be it from experienced mothers around her or through glossy ads.
That is why, when I saw this advertisement of how real postpartum depression is, it really left a deep impact on me.
1 in 5 mothers in India suffers from Post Partum Depression. A serious emotional condition which can manifest itself in the form of a mood swing to chronic depression. Anxiety, restlessness, changes in sleep pattern and lack of concentration are the common symptoms associated with it. The internal conflicts that the new mother in this ad faces are so real, and let’s confess that we too felt the same while taking the first few steps of motherhood.
At this time, if you know a new mother who is perhaps experiencing these symptoms, all that you need to do is be a little sensitive to her needs. Understand the implications of her ‘changed’ life and help her to fulfill her responsibilities. She needs a little more tender loving care. She needs to know that she is not being judged constantly. She needs to be told that she is doing a great job and everyone around her supports and appreciates her.
By supporting this brand’s cause, I pledge to support new moms by helping them open up, talk about, and not feel alone in their struggle with Post Partum Depression. It is not ‘unnatural’ – it is also a part of the journey of motherhood, affecting 1 in 5 mothers.
