India is currently the second largest populated country in the world with a population of 1.31 billion. It is expected to surpass China’s population to become the most populated country in the world by 2022. Why am I suddenly telling you this? This is to show the rate at which we are multiplying, which implies that a lot of us are having sex to produce these babies, right? Then, how come in this country of rampant baby production, a woman seeking pleasure while with her partner or by herself is still such a HUGE taboo? Are we expected to give birth but not expected to love the organ that helps in the birthing process?
This was the first question that came to my mind when I came across the incessant trolling that Actress Swara Bhaskar has been facing for her masturbation scene in Veere Di Wedding. From being compared to a porn star to a prostitute, Swara has faced it all for the scene where she is using a vibrator to pleasure herself!
Just imagine the irony and hypocrisy of the situation. While a woman gives birth, she is not supposed to enjoy sex and while men might even flash their dicks right on our faces and masturbate in public places, a woman is not even allowed to seek pleasure in privacy. I haven’t watched the movie but I read somewhere that apparently Swara’s onscreen husband catches her masturbating and threatens to spill the beans to her parents. It seems that these trolls are of the same mentality as well. That female masturbation is shameful, scandalous, and only ‘fallen’ woman do such abhorrent things!
Even if you consider the onscreen portrayal, male masturbation never raises so many questions about the actor and his character. Then why are women treated so differently?
There was another group of trolls who apparently visited the theaters with their grandmothers and were ashamed of Swara’s masturbation scene. Like, what exactly were you expecting from an adult movie?
Though it looks like the job of paid trolls, as a series of accounts posted the same Tweet, I have one piece of advice for you. If you’re going to watch an A-rated movie with your grandmother, then make sure you share that level of comfort with her to handle it well. Also, how are you assuming that your grandma never pleasured herself sexually? Maybe, she found a kindred spirit in Swara!
I’d like to end by reminding everyone that WOMEN ENJOY SEX. Please do not put us on a pedestal as a Devi or keep slut shaming us if we don’t follow your ‘rules’. Let us be normal human beings, just like men. Female masturbation is still such a taboo topic in India, and this is exactly the kind of mindset that has helped in keeping it under wraps.
Masturbation is healthy and stimulating yourself is an amazing way to understand what you like doing better under the sheets. Take a leaf out of onscreen Swara’s book, and do it more. Trust me, you’ll be far more satisfied and far less frustrated to spew vitriol on an actress for portraying something natural.
Bollywood, we request you to make more women masturbate onscreen so that Indians realize it is no big deal, and that there is absolutely nothing wrong with expression of female sexuality.
