Parenting often renders you with the most exhilarating as well as the most challenging experiences. Being a parent is like walking on a tight rope where you need to keep up the balance lest you fall majestically.

Every parent wants to raise a happy child. We swear by the parenting mantras of not comparing our child with anyone, to repeating to ourselves at frequent intervals, that each child is unique. But, can we actually stand by our children through their uniqueness?

A recent blog post, penned by a Gurgaon mom is being generously shared on the social media as it has struck a chord with every parent.

What is so special about this post, you may ask? Well, picture this – You come to know that your adolescent son is a woman trapped in the body of a man – in strict terms, has ‘gender dysphoria’. Now, what does that mean?

As per Google, gender dysphoria means, ‘The condition of feeling one’s emotional and psychological identity as male or female to be opposite to one’s biological sex.’

If such an unexpected revelation is made to a mother, she is bound to be in shock. But, the mother of this girl, who is currently on HRT(Hormone Replacement Therapy) is nothing but supportive of her girl.

In her blog post titled, O, Heavens, It’s a girl!’, this mother poignantly writes about her journey from a mother to a “naughty wicked little fella” to the mother of a trans woman.

Preparing yourself to be a mother of a trans child is not easy, but she is supportive of her child amidst all odds. When someone said to her that nature does not make mistakes, she answers, “Well, you only have to look around you and see how many trans people there are, to know that the possibility, while not huge, exists. Being a parent to a trans woman- it’s got to become my strength, not my weakness.”

She accepts that it is not going to be an easy path. But, she is mostly worried for her daughter’s suffering as she mentions, “…the reassignment surgery is tricky as it is painful, and the recuperation thereafter, long, tedious and agonising.”

But, what stands out in this post, is not only the boundless love that a mother has for her child, but her stand as a parent which is- to give unflinching support to her daughter and stand by her no matter what.

She is ready to accept her child with open arms as she writes, “The boy will soon be the girl- and we will embrace her in her new form with gratitude and complete acceptance. It is we, the parents, who will help the world accept her beauty, with her multifarious capabilities, and so she will start afresh, reborn as it were.”

In India, where parents are still wary about their children’s sexual orientation, this mother seems like a ray of hope shining through the dark veil of clouds. We wish there are more like her.
