Cochin… bowled me over

The plane hovered over the city for a good ten minutes giving us a bird’s eye view of a modern city nestling among green environs. A couple of rivers and backwaters made their way through the city giving it a unique city plan.

As the flight landed, the quaint terminal,  an interesting building made quite an impression. The red-tiled roof crowning a modern glass building laid the cards for what lay ahead.

The clean, huge, and completely solar powered airport welcomed us warmly!

The uber driver was there as promised. The pleasant young man doubled as city guide as he drove us to our destination.

We decided to explore the town a little and took a ferry to Fort Kochi. Our ticket cost merely ₹6… on a ferry, which was dot on time plying between clean, garbage free jetties.

Walking around in the hot morning through the narrow paved streets was more like walking through a museum. The dazzling display of crafts and craftsmanship from every corner of the country, was a joy.

Paintings, statues- in brass, copper and stone, perfumes, spices, attractive cotton shirts, sarees and dresses billowed in the sultry breeze.

We didn’t mind the sweat dripping down our brows, neck and back! The babel of voices indicated people had arrived from all corners of the globe. And the cynosure of all eyes was the quaint old Synagogue! Built in 1568, it’s well preserved and serene.

We ventured into the Dutch palace, an antique shop, a spice shop as we quenched our thirst with fresh coconut water straight from tender green coconuts.

The one thing that made Cochin most attractive to me were the beautiful huge trees everywhere. Their thick branches meander into space with luxuriant green leaves, trunks layered with orchids and ferns. Here and there were dried up ferns looking like an attractive dry arrangement.

Before we realized it was time to get back to our hotel,  so we rushed through the narrow, quaint streets once again and took the ferry back.

The cool sea breeze on our face, tugging at our hair was a cool respite.

On the ride back, we had a field day watching the Brahmi eagles fishing in the waters along with some cormorants and even a crow.

The beautiful,  confident women and handsome men everywhere seemed just right for this city. Since it was a Sunday people moved at ease enjoying their leisure time.

I would highly recommend a visit to this beautiful town and exploring it without being in a rush.

But be prepared for the heat…

After leaving her job due to low pay, Nandhini embarked on a new path by starting an agarbatti-making business. Her journey towards success would soon be accelerated with the help of Mahila Money.

“Getting married at a young age and being unable to pursue education beyond the 10th standard, I refused to let that limit my path to financial success. I have always been a hard worker, and I never shy away from putting in the effort. Whether it was my time in a watch manufacturing company or a medicine company in Hosur, I always gave my best. However, due to my limited educational qualifications, I faced the challenge of being underpaid. It was a turning point when I realised that taking control of my financial destiny was crucial. That’s when I left my previous jobs and dared to embrace the opportunity to build something of my own,” Nandhini shares, reflecting on her journey.

Starting small, dreaming big

Driven by careful planning, Nandhini entered the agarbatti market six years ago with her business – ‘Srinivasa Agarbatti’. She formed a small team of five employees and set up a store and a dedicated space to store raw materials in her godown. Nandhini’s entrepreneurial spirit was fueled not only by recognising the potential of the agarbatti market but also by her connection to the art of agarbatti making and its ability to bring positivity to people’s lives.

Talking about her journey, she says, “For me, starting my own business was more than just a practical decision. I saw the promising opportunity in the agarbatti market and felt a strong spiritual connection to this aromatic craft. I believed in the positive impact that agarbattis could have on people’s lives. This belief pushed me to overcome challenges and take this transformative journey. Today, I am grateful to have combined my passion and purpose to create a business that succeeds and brings peace and joy to those who experience its fragrant offerings.”

Overcoming hurdles in her way

Despite her initial success, Nandhini yearned for further growth and expansion. Her dream of purchasing two additional agarbatti-making machines, each priced at ₹75,000 INR, seemed out of reach due to limited capital. She was already paying  ₹6000+ INR to her employees besides investing in the raw materials needed in the business, which made it difficult for her to invest in additional machinery.

However, with the infusion of capital and the expansion of her team, Nandhini’s business thrived. “Before taking the loan, I was earning around INR 40K-50K. Now, my profits have soared to around INR 70K. I’m thrilled to see my progress, as is my husband, who has supported me from the beginning. My kids are my biggest cheerleaders, who are always there, rooting for their Amma’s success,” shares Nandhini.

Nandhini’s plans fo the future

Nandhini plans to build her agarbatti brand, cementing her mark in the industry. As she looks ahead, Nandhini excitedly shares her plans, “I am now gearing up to market my agarbattis under my very own brand name. I’m still contemplating the perfect name, but I’m leaning towards “Nandhini” as it signifies a woman who brings joy and is another name for the goddess Parvati. It feels like a fitting tribute to my journey.” With a smile, she eagerly anticipates the next chapter in her entrepreneurial endeavour.

I Find Intimacy Through Being Liberated Within

Intimacy is such a powerful word, and yet our first impression is always about it being physical.

For generations we have thought of intimacy as only being physical; the real definition somehow has come to become diluted over the years. Today being physical is only and only about sex and is often referred to as intimacy. But little do we realise to what intimacy can really be; limitless.

What does intimacy mean to me?

Many things, but above all for me intimacy means being liberated.

One needs to be able to have a profound relationship with their existence, with their life, with themselves. I derive intimacy in my life through my liberated being. Over time and experience, we come to draw our awareness to what this life or existence means to us.  Having this realisation we then strive to make a conscious choice every day to rise above just merely existing and to start living.

Bored with the mundane atrocities that life keeps throwing at us, and as women, we depict immense strength to keep enduring and marching forward. I have come to realise that by channelling this strength and directing it to a more intimate journey with myself I can accelerate life’s experiences to be a rather blissful one. By being liberated I feel I share a rather intimate relation with my life.

It’s about believing in yourself

It’s about believing in yourself and not being confined by what is expected of you. It is about channelling your thoughts and perspective towards life in a way that you want to see things and not how you are told to see them.

It is by taking your power back, to control and to react, to observe and to feel, to experience and to learn, to love and to set free. I’ve never felt more intimate with myself than being liberated, it is an adrenaline rush you feel when you have the power to control what happens to you. Be it the good or the bad, you take control.

This deep sense of intimacy I have with life makes me feel so complete, as I write this piece I can sense the divine power of being me flowing onto all of you too.

How Gratitude Can Be A Game Changer For Your Overall Well Being And Relationships

Does it feel a little dramatic to sit down every night and write down all that you have been grateful for that day? Although it is not at all ridiculous, it may sound rather old-fashioned and remind you of your moral science teacher in school who gave you those life lessons. 

Well you may not be journaling to list the things you are grateful for, but at least acknowledge what you have been blessed with rather than fretting and complaining about what you do not have. A few words of caution: you certainly need to rewrite the rules of your life if you have downplayed the importance of gratitude in your day-to-day existence.

Amazing results from a research study

There has been a growing body of evidence in the field of social science in regard to gratitude. In addition to the pleasant feeling it generates, being grateful immensely contributes towards physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing.

One such research study on gratitude by Dr. Robert A. Emmons of the University of California, Davis, and Dr. Michael E. McCullough of the University of Miami came up with interesting revelations. Randomly divided into 3 groups, the participants were asked to write a few sentences each week on a topic that was assigned to them.

One group focused on what they were grateful for in the entire week. The second group wrote about things that upset and aggravated them. The third group concentrated on all events, positive or negative, that they were affected by.

Ten weeks later, the results of the study revealed that the group who wrote about gratitude felt better both physically and emotionally. The respondents shared that they were happy and content with their lives. It was enlightening to learn that they were exercising more and were visiting physicians less frequently than those who highlighted their irritations and causes of displeasure.

Showers of abundant happiness!

For one who is grateful, happiness comes from even the minutest of blessings that life throws at them. Optimism is what rules them, and they always see a rainbow beneath the clouds.

A person who is thankful for the goodness in their past and present tends to look forward to the future with a positive mindset. He or she musters the strength to face adversity and has the conviction to make the best of what might come in the way.

Gratitude can be a game changer

It may not be the only cure for your stress and anxiety, but practicing gratitude regularly can break the chain of negative thoughts causing turmoil in the human mind.

The role of medical science cannot be sidelined in treating ailments, but in its own little way, a grateful temperament is linked with reducing blood pressure and supporting heart health. Once you make a conscious effort to be happy and to be thankful for the good things that you have, the body naturally goes into the relaxation mode.

And finally, it is about building a strong fortress of lasting relationships through gratitude

If you summarize your life and define your successes, it should not only cover your impressive career graph or the amount of assets that you have accumulated. The complete picture encompasses the humane values that you have inculcated and the true, unconditional relationships that you have built over time. A lot revolves around how empathetic and respectful you have been towards those who have cared about you.

Being a women in mid 30s is a challenge for many. A lot is at stake and we have to break barriers to get what we want. One such challenge is “dealing with our bodies”. Yes, a woman’s body goes under numerous changes since her birth and till the time she reaches at a certain age where willingly or forcefully she starts thinking about it (hates it). You read it correct, at some point of her life a woman just hates how she looks, believe it or not. This happened with me recently when I was trying to search good dresses for my vacation and failed, not in one online app but in 2 more.

In the context of personalization and customisation several fashion apps ask you to describe your body shape, and still they can’t offer the appropriate dress to you. It’s the story that has been the same since years. Indian women have always preferred saree over any other outfit as it covers there bodies in the most beautiful way and yes you don’t require any specific measurements for it. But times have changed where we now focus on “Comfort Wearing” and that means we should be happy wearing whatever we decide to wear.

What is size-inclusive clothing and do women of all sizes fit in this?

We women for that matter even men have tried and tested clothes after clothes just to get that perfect look for an office meeting, a casual party or a family get-together but we have failed miserably several times and always stick to few styles that often best suit us. People reading this should know that it’s not our fault, we have unique bodies. The sizes cannot be generalised and the brands selling the specific sizes always focus on UK, US, Europe are to be blamed here. To find a solution in 2019 a project called INDIAsize was launched by the Govt. of India that promises to offer clothing as per a size chart designed specifically for the Indian bodies. The project will entail gathering anthropometric data pan India from more than 25000 (Twenty-Five Thousand) male and female persons between the age group of 15 years and 65 years using human safe 3D whole body scanning technology. The created body size chart will help national and international retailers and manufacturers to produce goods which are best suited for Indian body types and create a balance between demand and supply of well fitted garments. Meanwhile Size inclusivity and Bodyequality have been hot topics in the fashion industry that aims to offer all types of clothing for all types of body shapes. Although the fat acceptance movement first started in 1960s but no one literally cared of the real need for size inclusion until now. Today if a brand is not making clothes that are size inclusive then they are not up to the mark. I personally was surprised to know that there are few brands that still levy “Fat tax” on plus size apparels as they think more cloth is required and more time is put in to stitching a particular dress. Isn’t that a shame for a brand to do so?

Years have passed by battling over the size issue in the fashion industry where only thin models used to showcase the latest trends and that meant people with only those kind of body shapes could wear those clothes and others used to just sob somewhere in a corner. But now the fashion industry has evolved where thin is in and plus-sizes are welcomed equally. The ‘plus-size’ category covers majority market in the fashion industry and according to a survey done by Research and Markets, the industry is expected to increase by CAGR 4.3% in the coming years that turns around to be a trillion dollar industry.

Increase in the plus-size industry can be an alarm towards an unhealthy lifestyle but there are people who are fat but fit and they can be fat because of numerous reasons and nobody can stop them from wearing clothes that make them comfortable and happy at the same time. In blaming the brands first, I don’t want to neglect the education system that’s included in the courses taken by the fashion learning students. Even the fashion education must include about the inclusion of plus-sizes so that designers can design clothing in those sizes.

Sizing and designing clothing for each and every size available in the market can be difficult for the manufacturers and the retailers as there are several other cost involved in it which could hamper their overall business. But we need to pave through it and design clothes where every body is happy wearing every type of clothing. We need to normalise the situation of sizing in way that doesn’t effect the emotional state of the customer which he/she feels after getting into the small fitting rooms to try the outfit.

As for the Brand’s perspective they can benefit from size inclusivity

1. They will help boost confidence in the plus-size women by showing that even they can wear all types clothes and flaunt their bodies.

2. Women won’t stop shopping, so if as brand you give them clothes that fit all size then surely be loyal to and will buy clothes just from your brand. Who doesn’t like clothes that fit perfectly.

3. As the fashion industry is evolving so are the sizes and as a brand if you aren’t designing it for everyone then you will be out of the market soon.
